Alex Wilkerson '11 returned to Charlottesville to complete his MPP degree through UVA’s Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy. Alex is a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton.
Amy Whitcomb '05 worked in Sequoia National Park immediately after graduation. She was a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, and now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works for the Public Library of Science and is pursuing a Certificate in Creative Writing. Her poems have appeared in Frogpond, Modern Haiku, Contemporary Haibun Online, Simply Haiku, The Heron's Nest, Rattlesnake Review, Sacramento News and Review, and Berkeley Poetry Review.
Andrew D'Huyvetter ’05 went into the Urban and Environmental Planning program in the School of Architecture at UVA and obtained a masters degree in 2007. He is currently working for the Onyx Group in Alexandria as an Urban Planner/Federal Planner/GIS Analyst. His work involves military base planning, which has recently incorporated sustainability into its overall vision. He obtained LEED AP status in 2008.
Anne Eschenroeder '06 led teenage boys building hiking trails in Idaho for four months, and then moved to Portland, Oregon where she managed an urban garden and was a garden educator for two years. After participating in a farming apprenticeship program at U.C. Santa Cruz, Anne moved to New Paltz, NY were she is the farm manager for a not-for-profit educational working farm, Phillies Bridge Farm Project (www.philliesbridge.org).
Ashley Lowe '06 graduated from the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources with a M.S. in Environmental Policy. She works at the Center for Clean Air Policy as a U.S. Policy Research Assistant.
Ben Abraham '10 moved to Washington D.C. to work in an Environmental Consulting position with The Cadmus Group. His team’s client work is on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Indoor Environments Division as well as the ENERGY STAR Program. Ben works on a wide variety of issues including but not limited to Children’s Health, Green and Healthy Schools, Asthma and Environmental Tobacco Smoke. In support of these programs a large chunk of his assignments center themselves around the specific realm of Marketing and Communications.
Ben Rottenborn '03 graduated from Stanford Law School in 2006 and clerked for a federal court in Arizona. He is an Associate Attorney with Kirkland and Ellis in Chicago, where he focuses on complex civil defense litigation.
Benson Gabler '04 worked for an environmental research institute in Hamburg, Germany, founded by Michael Braungart, business partner of William McDonough and co-author of Cradle to Cradle. In 2009, he graduated from Yale with Master's degrees in Business and Environmental Management. He is Director of Corporate Sustainability at PNC Financial Services in Pittsburgh.
Beth Stein '08 worked for the U.S. Geological Survey/Univ of Arkansas Cooperative, traveling the Mississippi River watershed surveying marsh birds, with a focus on the threatened king rail. Beth is pursuing a PhD in the remote sensing of forest resources at Virginia Tech.
Bevin Moeller '04 studies Geographic Information Systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She hopes to work for a state or national government agency using GIS to model the relationships between public health, transportation, and land use. She is also interested in using GIS for anthropological research, specifically to examine cultural changes in relation to global climate change.
Bridget Wandelt ’07 is a consultant with ScottMadden, Inc., a general management consulting firm with offerings chiefly in the energy and corporate and shared services fields. After college, Bridget took her interest abroad, working for the clean energy practice of a management consulting firm in Switzerland and serving as a Transatlantic Renewable Energy Fellow in Germany. Carina Gervacio '05 is the program coordinator at Brainfood. She volunteered for Migrant Aid as an English tutor for migrant youth and adults in central Virginia. She has worked for several environmental non-profits, including the Southern Environmental Law Center and the League of Conservation Voters.
Caroline Heins is working with the Alliance for Community Choice in Transportation (ACCT), a small non-profit advocacy group that works on alternative transportation issues in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. She started there working with children and a safe routes to school program but is now the acting executive director on a full time basis. She loves working at ACCT because she believes that alternative transportation is important for our culture's long term sustainability outlook, and she feels like she can really make a positive difference in Central Virginia.
Caroline Normile '08 worked for a year as a Meteorological Analyst for the NOAA National Weather Service testing weather equipment before entering the graduate school in the Department of Meteorology at Penn State. She completed her Master’s thesis on tropospheric ozone transport and detection by satellites.
Christoph Herby '05 raced bicycles professionally for two years after graduating, competing around the world from China to the Dominican Republic to the Blue Ridge Mountains. He started a rickshaw service in Charlottesville, called Happy Rickshaw. He joined the Peace Corps in Benin and launched the Moringa Association of Benin as an NGO. Most recently, he works for the International Committee of the Red Cross, coordinating food assistance and livelihood projects for victims of armed conflict in the Central African Republic.
Claudia Andre '04 is an attorney at a law firm in Philadelphia. She practices corporate and commercial litigation, which often includes environmental law matters. She studied law at George Mason University and she has clerked at the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance. Prior to entering law school she worked at Beveridge & Diamond, an environmental law firm in Washington, D.C.
Colin Peppard '03 landed a position as Energy Associate at Massachusetts PIRG, one of the largest environmental advocacy groups nationwide. He also worked as the Deputy Transportation Director in the Washington office of the Natural Resources Defense Council. Most recently, Colin works in the U.S. Senate for Senator Tom Carper of Delaware.
Dan Shean '05 worked for the Student Conservation Association and the US Environmental Protection Agency between undergrad and law school. In 2008, Dan graduated from UVA School of Law, where he concentrated in environmental law. As a law student, he interned at the Environmental Crimes Section of the Department of Justice. Since graduating, he served as a law clerk for a federal district judge in Virginia and as a law clerk for the Honorable Barry G. Silverman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Phoenix, Arizona. He works as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, in Norfolk, Virginia.
Danielle LaRock '09 went on to complete her M.S. degree in Environmental Science at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is now a fellow in the Presidential Management Fellows program, a flagship leadership development program in the federal government for advanced degree candidates. This prestigious two-year program is designed with a focus of developing government leaders and provides opportunities to gain experience in public service through challenging work assignments, formal classroom training, and a developmental project. Danielle is working at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, WV on professional training courses dealing with climate change, structured decision-making, and strategic habitat conservation.
Elio Jordan '09 interned at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research in D.C. (a progressive political and consulting firm) for one year before moving back to Lima, Peru. There, Elio worked as an external consultant for Right to Play, an international NGO that focuses on child development through the use of sport and play, as well as at a local leading corporate communications firm as an Internal Projects consultant. Elio then joined EnseñaPeru, a young organization based on the Teach for America model, where young professionals are recruited to teach for two years at low-income and vulnerable-area public schools to try to improve education in the country.
Elizabeth Dubovsky '05 runs an outreach program that she founded five years ago in Alaska for Trout Unlimited, a national non-profit organization. Through her program, Elizabeth educates and engages commercial fishermen, seafood processors, chefs, retailers, and consumers in some of today’s biggest Pacific salmon conservation issues. Elizabeth has also served as the interim Executive Director for a regional seafood development association in Alaska, working for commercial salmon fishermen to help them adapt to economic and ecological changes. Recently, she partnered with local fishermen to start a Community Supported Fishery (CSF) program in Alaska’s capital as a way encourage a more sustainable local food system.
Elizabeth Ritch '10 was a Panama Initiative Fellow in the summer of 2010. She is working at Environ in Princeton, NJ.
Emily Graham '13 is working in DC at the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation as the Grants Administrator for their Chesapeake Bay Program.
Emily Russell '08 worked in Richmond, VA for communities affected by hazardous waste, including the TVA coal ash spill. Emily studied at Tulane University Law School, taking environmental law classes and assisting a professor with research on renewable energy regulations.
Erin Potter '03 attended The University of Tulsa College of Law, concentrating on a certificate program entitled “Sustainable Energy and Resource Law.” It is a program designed to prepare students for the fields of energy, environmental, and natural resource law., Erin clerked at the EPA Office of Compliance and Enforcement in Washington, D.C.
Erin Puckett '07 is studying Urban and Regional Planning at Virginia Tech.
Erin Sterner Since graduating from UVA, I've completed my master's in Sustainability and Environmental Management from Harvard where my capstone focused on "Building Comprehensive Sustainable School Programs in K-12 Schools". I'm pleased to say I have found my passion in K-12 education for sustainability. I'm on the school board for our district and just finished coordinating the building of a 141kW solar system that covers 75% of the school's electric needs and will save the district over $300,000 over the next 20 years. This year I've been accepted into the Education for Sustainability Leadership Fellowship at Shelburne Farms in Vermont and look forward to diving even deeper into the field.
Fania Gordon '04 is graduated from the UVA School of Architecture with a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning
Gabe Silver '07 worked as counselor at a wilderness therapy school for troubled boys in Buckingham County, VA. Most recently, he works as an Environmental Educator for the James River Association in Richmond, VA.
Halley Epstein '11 graduated from Yale Law School in 2014. She served as president in Yale's Environmental Law Association, leading the Jewish law students' association, and was an articles editor for the Journal on Regulation. During her summers, Halley had an internship at the California AG's office in the Natural Resources section in Los Angeles and worked for two law firms: Simpson Thacher and Susman Godfrey. She is currently a law clerk at the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of PA.
Jacqueline Goodrum (Tolson) '07 worked in London with the UNEP’s SEED Initiative, a sustainable development project, and the Environmental Law Foundation, a non-profit environmental law firm. More recently, she returned to the U.S. to begin study at Vermont Law School where she is enrolled in the joint JD/Masters in Environmental Law & Policy program.
Jean Kim is attending Ewha Womans University (Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation) in Seoul.
Jen Fier '08 teaches students with severe disabilities a class incorporating therapeutic recreation in Springfield, Virginia. Jen spent a summer working at an outdoor expedition camp in Colorado, volunteers with the Nature Conservancy, and races triathlons.
Jenny Jones '04 taught 7th and 8th grade science for two years in Oakland, CA through the Teach for America program. She then taught 6th grade science in Arlington, VA and volunteered with Casey Trees in Washington, D.C. She graduated from the UVA Architecture School with masters degrees in Landscape Architecture and Urban and Environmental Planning. In October 2010, Jenny and two of her fellow graduate classmates were awarded first place in the Student Category of the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI–ARC) Los Angeles Cleantech Corridor and Green District Competition. Jenny was the ETP Administrator from 2007-2011 and is now working at OLIN, a landscape architecture firm in California.
Jessica Church '13 is working in Washington, D.C. for a small political consulting firm that handles faith messaging for democratic campaigns and progressive non-profits. They work frequently on climate and other environmental issues. As part of that job, she serves as the Field Director of the Good Steward Campaign, a faith-based environmental organization that works primarily on college campuses to inform and engage students in conversations about religion, the environment, and fossil fuel divestment. She hopes that this campus outreach will motivate and equip students with the skills to start sustainability or fossil fuel divestment campaigns at their respective schools and in their faith communities.
Jessie White '09 began law school at the University of South Carolina in the fall of 2009. She has focused her J.D. degree by taking environmental courses including Federal Environmental Law, Coastal Law, Climate Change Law & Policy, Constitutional Issues in Property and Land Use Planning. Jessie has held an internship with the Coastal Conservation League in Charleston, SC in the land use and planning department as well as an internship with the Conservation Voters in Columbia, SC where she helped promote environmental and conservation legislation at the State House. Most recently Jessie spent the summer clerking for the Department of Natural Resources.
Jim Gould '08 works as an Environmental Educator at Jeannette's Pier, a Platinum LEED certified state owned fishing pier in Nags Head, NC. Previously, he was the Conservation Project Director for the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club.
John Bedard '06 works as an environmental data analyst for Perrin Quarles, an environmental consulting firm in Charlottesville.
John Bernhardt '08 moved to the Bay Area and spent 2.5 years working as an environmental educator and program coordinator with the Alliance for Climate Education. John then worked as Support Director for Run While You Can - a charity ultra-endurance hiking event that traverses 2,650 miles on the PCT while raising around $160,000 for Parkison’s Disease research. John is working for the Clean Coalition - a Bay Area clean energy advocacy group - managing communications and operations.
John Nay '12 is a PhD student at Vanderbilt University and a fellow at the Institute for Energy and Environment.
Julia Glendening '10 is an environmental consultant at SC&A, Inc. (Sanford Cohen and Associates, Inc.). She performs waste facility audits and provides onsite support for the NEPA office at the Department of Energy
Katie Spidalieri '09 is a law student at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in Ohio. She is an Associate member of the Cleveland State Law Review and looks forward to any scholarly writing experience. During the Summer of 2011, Katie worked under Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources for the Critical Area Commission for the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays where she got to assist in the process of writing regulations for the state.
Kelly (McElwee) Altizer '09 spent the year after graduation volunteering with Americorps in West Virginia. She graduated with a Masters of Environmental Management program from Duke where she spent time researching environmental conflict and peace building, and worked for a nonprofit in Raleigh on environmental legislation. She is now the program manager for the Institute for Environmental Negotiation at UVA.
Kelly-Ann Williams '13 is teaching Kindergarten at Broadus Wood Elementary school in Charlottesville.
Kendall Singleton '07 works at the Institute of Human Nutrition at Columbia University. Previously, she founded the "Green Dining Initiative," whose goal is to make the UVa dining experience more sustainable. See the Cavalier Daily article and the Cville article discussing her project. Khalial Withen '06 is an associate at the law firm Jermain, Hunnagan and Owens in Ankorage, Alaksa. Lila Warren '09 worked for the Piedmont Environmental Council for a year and a half, directing their summer Fellowship program for college students. Lila is back in school pursuing a Master's Degree (MS) in Fisheries Biology at Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville Tennessee. For her thesis research, Lila is performing an evaluation of the state muskellunge stocking program in the Collins River and Upper Caney Fork watershed.

Matt Leisten '13 completed an internship with Resources for the Future, an environmental economics think tank. He worked as an analyst at Compass Lexecon, an economic consulting firm until 2014. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. in Economics at Northwestern University, specializing in industrial organization, applied microeconomic theory, and public finance.
Michelle Rehme '11 works for the UVA Foundation at Morven Farm – a 3,000 acre property that has become a landscape for critical thinking, retreats, and interdisciplinary classes for the University. Michelle lives and works at Morven, where she manages a 1-acre educational garden (complete with a chicken flock) and coordinates events and classes that take place on the beautiful property.
Mike Figura '04 owns a real estate company called Mosaic Community Lifestyle Realty in Asheville, NC that focuses on green building, historic homes, and walk-able and bike-able properties. His company has a focus on sustainability, and hires a building scientist to do an energy audit for every home that they sell. Since moving to Asheville, Mike has also worked as a sustainable planning and development consultant with a firm called GreenPlan Inc. and has been a partner in a green building/urban infill development company, developing many small infill green homes and a net zero home made from hemp.
Mike Hankinson '10 is a Ph.D. student in the Joint Program in Government and Social Policy at Harvard University. His research uses spatial econometrics to understand land use and development patterns, regarding both urban development and suburban sprawl. Broadly speaking, he wants to know where people live and why. Currently, Mike is collaborating with the NYU Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy to model the drivers of neighborhood change and gentrification in New York City.
Nancy Peterson '13 had an internship with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). She leanred how funding is allocated to different conservation efforts. She is also applying for the Peace Corps.

Peter Hogge '07 spent two years in the Peace Corps Jamaica, working with the town's local primary schools on several projects including developing a computer lab. Peter attended law school at the University of Maryland, focusing on environmental and international law. In Spring 2011, he travelled to Namibia to participate in the University of Maryland Human Rights Clinic.
Peter Swigert '10 worked for The Nature Conservancy both in Montana and in Washington, DC doing wildlife research and geographic information systems (GIS). Peter joined the global consulting firm Accenture in 2011, and has since worked on projects for the Department of Homeland Security and the Postal Service.
Rachel Nelson '10 worked for a year as project manager with local sustainability non-profits Better World Betty and Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) in Charlottesville. Rachel is now completing her Master’s degree in Urban and Environmental Planning at UVA’s school of Architecture.
Rebekah Berlin '10 is a 2010 Teach for America Corps member in Memphis, TN. She is going to continue working in Memphis, next year at a charter school.
Reem Alamiri '08 received her Masters in Public Policy from UVA in 2009 and spent a few months working with the Panama Initiative, gathering information about the solid waste management system in Colon, Panama, including a month residence in Colon. Reem received a fellowship from the Aga Khan Development Network to work at the Brookings Institution on issues of international development - an Early Childhood Development project and a water management project for the Jordan River Valley.
Ryan Gilchrist '09 joined a start-up small wind turbine manufacturer called Urban Green Energy, headquartered in New York City. Over the past two years, UGE has more than tripled in size and Ryan is the Business Development Manager, leading a team of 11 people.
Samantha Hudson '05 moved to Hawaii to work as an Environmental and Facilities Planner in 2007. Since then—she’s surfed quite a bit—and also obtained accreditations with the USGBC and the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). She works as a Program Manager/Senior Planner for Enterprise and Sustainability Programs with Kamehameha Schools.
Sarah Buckley '09 graduated from UVA's Law School in 2014. She is now clerking for the Honorable T.S. Ellis III in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District Court of Virginia. In 2015 she will begin to clerk for Judge Rogers on the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to law school, she was the Finance Director at Toscano for Delegate and was also a real estate/administrative legal assistant for a small Charlottesville-area firm.

Shiming Yang '11 is pursuing a Master of Science on Environmental Policy and Planning at the University of Michigan, School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE). She participated in a state-funded research project in China, focusing on Inland Aquaculture Pollution Management and Policy.
Suzanne Pinckney '06 has been working in corporate sustainability strategy consulting with two former Batten Fellows (Darden), Brian and Mary Nattrass of Sustainability Partners. She is in Tarrytown, NY near Stone Barns Center where she interns in the field and greenhouse and carries on her passion for sustainable agriculture started in Portland, OR where she helped found a community farm. Suzanne finished a MBA in sustainable business from Bainbridge Graduate Institute.
Taylor Martin '06 worked three years in economic consulting before entering the Masters in Public Policy Program at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz College. Taylor has interned at Resources for the Future, working on a project involving wind turbines, and at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in the Office of Enforcement.
Thushara Gunda '10 is attending Vanderbilt University, she is a PhD cadidate in environmental engineering and a National Science Foundation Fellow. Previously, she was an assistant project scientist at Weston Solutions, Inc.
Tori Evans '08 worked for a non-profit in Alaska that retrofitted native community buildings to save energy for rural, low-income communities. In 2009, Tori landed in Cairo, Egypt to teach English and explore some cross-cultural exchanges. After about a year and a half of freelance teaching English, yoga, and some workshops on air and water pollution, Tori started working at an environmental consulting firm, coordinating projects like environmental and social impact assessments, national solid waste management planning, and environmental monitoring and enforcement. She is pictured snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef during her time studying abroad in Australia.
Veronica Gutierrez '10 is working with Environment America, a federation of state-wide, citizen based nonprofits that work to improve and protect environmental legislation. She is currently working to protect the Clean Air Act.
Viola Li '13 works full time at Cornerstone Research, an economic and litigation consulting firm and is planning on applying to law school.
